Miriam is an artist-run gallery and bookshop dedicated to working collaboratively with artists to support their practices and foster inclusive art experiences. Housed in a 1,250 square-foot former matzah factory in South Williamsburg, the gallery opened its doors in December 2019.
Miriam is devoted to centering artists at all stages of their careers, and engaging with the historic and culturally-rich neighborhood of Williamsburg. Art books are integral to all of Miriam’s programming, complicating the formal structures of showing, and expanding upon the ways in which we can experience artwork. Miriam’s public programs serve as a connective tissue between books and exhibitions, providing deeper context into our values and the works represented. Miriam creates opportunities for conversations with artists and the general public through unconventional residencies, performances, publishing projects, workshops, and local partnerships. In placing these practices at the fore, Miriam seeks to create a space rooted in methods which are approachable, democratic, and accessible. By approaching Miriam as a vessel that can be constantly re-imagined, we seek to expand the public understanding of what a gallery’s role in the art industry might be.
